I cherish going to the movies for each year. I love weird movies that give you something you don’t expect. Midsommar was one that had me in awe and in its grasp from scene one. One of my favorites of the year so far for sure. Every week, I wanna look back on Volkswagen this is my hallmark christmas movie watching shirt t-shirt or even a contemporary classic that I believe people should watch. I feel like this page gets bombarded by the newest Disney Marvel Star Wars films that come out. That isn’t a bad thing- I adore those films but I also wanna put a spotlight on films that don’t get talked about to death. I decided because of what’s going on in the world today to discuss Charlie Chaplin’s 1940 masterpiece “The Great Dictator”. A lot of people believe this is Chaplin’s best film.

It’s up there with The Kid and City Lights for me, the man was just a legend. The Great Dictator is easily his most socially relevant. At the time to poke fun at Volkswagen this is my hallmark christmas movie watching shirt t-shirt and Hitlers regime was such a gutsy move for a filmmaker to make. There’s no way a film like this could come out in today’s age. Chaplin himself said he kinda regretted showing Nazis in a humorous way once he realized just how serious the holocaust actually was. However- I think it’s kinda perfect. Spike Lee used the same approach in last year. Showing despicable and vile people in a way to mock them is an excellent way to deconstruct their character and show them as the true monsters they are. The best part of the film is the end monologue.

It’s amazing to show the parallels to Volkswagen this is my hallmark christmas movie watching shirt t-shirt and realize unfortunately not much changed in our climate. His words, “our knowledge has made us cynical; our cleverness hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery, we need humanity. More than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness.” are words I think about a lot. Simply, people like Chaplin understood the human condition and where it was going. I think as we see what’s going on in the world today, it’s divisiveness we all need to hear what Chaplin was saying. Always lead with love and compassion for others before anything else, because that’s the only real universal truth in this world.
