Last night I saw It: Chapter Two and I have a lot of thoughts. The actors and characters were excellent and very fun to watch. This movie is surprisingly funny, though it honestly bordered on being a horror comedy which I didn’t like since the source material and general story are both incredibly dark. There were creepy scenes but as a whole, this movie was not scary. The scares are ways to over the top and CGI was too heavily used and, frankly, not all that good in some scenes. This Pennywise Santa Claus costume shirt is really long but the pacing is very disorienting. They packed in as much of the source material as they could fit so we have no time to breathe as jump from huge set piece to huge set piece. They should’ve cut back on the individualized scenes and focused more on the antagonists and tension like they do in the book.

SweatshirtThe ending is closer to the book than the original and they tackle some cosmic horror elements. It could be too over the top for some but I enjoyed it. There’s also a twist with Bill Hader’s character that wasn’t in the book and just didn’t need to be there. Also, the Pennywise Santa Claus costume shirt line couldn’t possibly have made me roll my eyes harder. It’s long and overstuffed, there are things missing from the book that would’ve been more interesting than some of what was kept or added, and it’s a little more fantasy comedy than horror at times. But it’s entertaining, never boring, there are a couple genuinely frightening scenes, and the characters are super fun to watch. It’s a mixed bag but easily enjoyed in spite of its flaws. I prefer the 2017 film but look forward to revisiting this one. Still better than the 1990 film.

I do feel it will get better with my second viewing. The book is my Pennywise Santa Claus costume shirt and I think it distracted me from being able to give it a full 100% of my attention. It’s funny though. I didn’t have this happen at all when I initially saw the first one. I think the first one was better at meeting my expectations because instead of trying to emulate every little scene and plot point from book, it captured the essence of what makes the book so amazing in the first place. The adult cast perfectly portrays the original gang, gives stellar performances, and has chemistry that rivals the first crew. The fear is just as imaginative and the humor just as hysterical as the original. While this feels more like a conglomeration of big, horrifying set pieces than a cohesive story.
